2013 StreetFest Winner: Davidson  Rafailidis

MirrorMirror

Storefront for Art and Architecture, along with partners the New Museum and Architizer, is pleased to announce that architecture practice  Davidson Rafailidis,  led by Georg  Rafailidis  and Stephanie Davidson from Buffalo, New York, is the winner of Storefront for Art and Architecture's 2013 StreetFest Competition.

The StreetFest competition is a biennial international competition in its second edition that calls for proposals for  the design, management, and construction of temporary outdoor spaces that produce new ways for collective gathering and city engagement. This year, more than 80 submissions were received from architects and designers from across the globe representing countries including Spain, France, Italy, England, Germany, China, Brazil and the United States.

Davidson Rafailidis' submission "MirrorMirror" was selected by a jury of 5 individuals in the art and architecture fields to be constructed as part of the 2013 Ideas City Festival in Downtown Manhattan on May 4, 20. “MirrorMirror” is a base unit covering twelve feet by sixteen feet. The design includes a simple forty-five-degree-angled gable roof made from mirroring panels. A single unit will house small programs.  When combined, the units create a large barn-like structure that will be host to larger gatherings. The design utilizes aluminum frames with Mylar mirror foil that are often used as glassless mirrors in dance studios. The material's modification for use as a construction material represents an innovative approach to design. The design premiered at the 2013 Ideas City Festival in Downtown Manhattan on May 4, 2013.
