STOREFRONT FELLOWSHIPS


 

Curatorial Fellows

Storefront for Art and Architecture seeks two Curatorial Fellows to assist in the research, planning,
exhibition design and installation of an upcoming exhibition at Storefront that will join contemporary
creative audiences with 101 unrealized proposals for New York, dating from its formation to today, to
construct alternative visions for the city. Fellows will work under the direction and advisement of the
Executive Director and will report regularly to the Operations Manager and Program Coordinator.
Fellows will have the opportunity to participate in the entire exhibition process – from research and
design to installation and archiving. The exhibition will take place in summer 2012.

 

Program Specifics
• Fellowships will begin in February and last six months.
• Fellow will work at his/her leisure, however the fellowship is estimated at minimum of 15
hours/week.
• Compensation: $2,500 for the duration of the internship with select employee benefits


Responsibilities

• Work with the Research Team to research unrealized proposals for New York probing private
collections and architect’s studios, libraries and architecture institutions, and public and
government archives.
• Work with the Design Team on design and presentation of researched material
• Draft texts describing the project and research presented
• Assist Storefront’s Project Coordinator and Producer in the installation of the exhibition
• Organize the production of exhibition materials including maps and timelines developed for
the project
• Liaison and assistance to architects and artists participating in the exhibition on behalf of the
Executive Director
• Liaison with speakers and presenters participating in a workshop and symposium as part of the
exhibition on behalf of the Executive Director
• Manage set-up of all events associated with the exhibition
• Design, develop and execute a one-day workshop on city planning with local high school
students in conjunction with the project
• Assist in the design, editing and production of the exhibition’s accompanying catalogue
• Transcribe workshops and lectures and assist in the development of content for the archive

 

Applicant Requirements

• Non-U.S. citizens must possess a valid work visa for the internship period
• Applicants must possess a four-year undergraduate degree in architecture or curatorial studies;
and/or be currently pursuing a graduate degree in the field
• Must process strong research and writing skills
• Macintosh proficiency in Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator software is required
• Knowledge of motion graphic applications and digital video production preferred
• Interest in contemporary arts and current design and cultural issues desired
• Successful applicants must have good communication and organizational skills and be able to
meet tight deadlines.

Storefront Design Fellow

Storefront for Art and Architecture seeks a Design Fellow to participate in a one-year graphic design
fellowship at an organization dedicated to advancing innovative positions in art, architecture and
design. The 2012 Design Fellow will work on a freelance basis on design projects throughout the year
that include developing a new graphic identity for the organization that is synonymous with the
organization’s mission and print and electronic materials that are produced for the organization’s
exhibitions, events and competitions throughout the year. Under the direction and guidance of the
Director of External Relations and the Executive Director, the Design Fellow will design 5-6 of
Storefront’s historic Newsprints; 2-3 publications/catalogues; 2-3 print invitations; and email templates;
among other projects.

 

Program Specifics

STOREFRONT 2011 INTERNSHIPS

 

 

Young entrepreneurs, recent graduates or college students have consistently gained practical work experience at Storefront. Interns play a crucial role in the accomplishment of Storefront's mission. Internships are based on Storefront's programming and needs and are assigned to candidates with the appropriate skills, attitude and interests.

 

Currently, Storefront is seeking applicants for Spring and year-long internships. Interns are integral members of a small staff and receive exposure to a broad range of activities from daily operations and exhibition installations, to institutional development, archival research or project research and development. Regardless of background, important prerequisites are independent and group working abilities and interest in cultural production, arts and architecture. Storefront is eager to mentor students or young professionals with strong design, research, writing and organizational sensibilities. While interns are exposed to the full spectrum of the institution's operations, Storefront offers interns an opportunity to focus more precisely in one of the following three categories: Archive, Development or Production.

 

All internships are unpaid, but can be redeemable for course credit. All applicants must be able to commit to at least 2 days per week. All interns are expected to help out with shared gallery responsibilities including:

- Monitoring exhibitions during gallery hours

- Providing information for visitors to the gallery

- Assisting Storefront staff with both long term projects and daily office tasks

 

 

All interns should hold the following qualifications:

- Interest in Storefront's mission

- Desire to gain knowledge of operations in a non-profit organization

- Ability to interact with people in a gallery setting, and work in small office environment

- General computer skills- word processing, data management, digital imaging

 

 

 

Book Store Intern

Storefront's Book Store Intern will work closely with our Business Manager to assist in tasks related to Storefront's Book Store and Publications program.  The intern will assist in maintaining physical store,  processing online orders, updating inventory, and tracking sales.  Additionally, this intern will help write marketing content and conduct research on possible new distributors and special sales customers.  


Requisites:

-Excellent typing, writing, and verbal communication skills

Preferred:

-Familiarity with Word and Excel

-Experience working with databases

-Knowledge of modern and contemporary art history and architecture

Archive Intern

Storefront's Archive Intern will work closely with materials relating to the history of the Gallery.  The Archive Intern will assist in organizing, preserving, and describing a group of documents or photographs and undertaking related digital preservation and database development activities.

 

Requisites:

-Strong verbal communication skills and an acute attention to detail
-Good working knowledge of Photoshop and computer systems
-Basic Photography skills

Preferred:

-Knowledge of modern and contemporary art history and architecture

-Familiarity with Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop

Development and Membership Intern


Storefront's Membership and Development Intern will work closely with our Director of Development to assist in multiple tasks related to fund raising. The intern will assist in researching, drafting, and submitting grant applications, develop fund raising strategies, and will also be involved in all aspects of planning Storefront's Spring Benefit event. This intern will assist with researching potential donors, maintaining the donations database, managing the grants calendar, and filing and archiving grant information.

 

The Membership and Development Intern will be responsible for assisting in the management and expansion of Storefront's membership program. This includes designing strategies for expanding Storefront's audience and public, keeping Storefront's members database updated, proposing and generating materials for web and mail-based membership campaigns and helping develop and coordinate new membership events. This intern will have the opportunity to work closely with staff and the Membership Committee of the Board of Directors to develop strategies to attract members and to expand member benefits.

 

Requisites:

- Detail-oriented, comfortable working with numbers and databases
- Creative interpersonal thinking
- Great interpersonal skills

Preferred:

- Good writing skills

- Familiarity with Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop

Production Intern

 

Storefront's Production Intern will work closely with the Producer to carry through the preparation, installation and break-down of shows. These Interns will also conduct tasks like sourcing materials, contacting providers and researching solutions for gallery issues. During exhibitions Production Interns will assist with the maintenance of exhibitions and the office space.

Requisites:
- Building skills, experience with the use of power tools and other construction equipment.
- Ability to work under time constraints and flexible schedule
- Dedication
Preferred:
- Familiarity with Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Premiere Pro, InDesign
- Familiarity with Autocad and Sketchup
